This season Oregon FTC is piloting the CONTROL AWARD (consult game manual). You might have noticed that the CONTROL Award is not on the FTC Advancement list. FIRST has declined to include it as part of the advancement list. (see game manual- 3.8). Oregon FTC petitioned national FTC to treat the CONTROL Award as an independent award in the same way we treat the PROMOTE Award, meaning a team could win an independent award AND another Judged Award. They agreed with our proposal. This means that the Judges have the option to award the CONTROL Award in addition to any other Judged Award that is on the advancement list. FOR EXAMPLE: A team could be awarded the PTC Design Award [insert any Judged Award] and the Control Award. Judges do have the option of awarding just the Control Award if they feel that best fits the situation at any given tournament.

Bottom line: Teams will not be penalized and lose out on an advancement slot because they received the Control Award and it is not on the advancement list. Truthfully this will not be so important during our QTs because there are only 3 or 4 advancement slots to award per event (see game manual- 3.8). However, it will impact our State Championship which has 11 advancement slots to the FTC Western Regional Championship.
